This year has really flown by and it's going by even faster now that classes have started up. It's already been 3 weeks of class- somehow I feel like I've barely started classes and that I've been in classes forever all at the same time. I'm enjoying them so far, but it's a lot of somewhat tedious reading. My first round of exams starts on September 24, so we'll see how much I like classes then.
In sad news my aunt had a massive heart attack this week and she is recovering poorly. She had an aneurysm that was repaired in early August, but shortly after the surgery she began having kidney failure and was in and out of the hospital. She was home for about a week then she had this heart attack and was back in the hospital. She also has pneumonia with significant fluid buildup in her lungs, requiring a ventilator. She is also back on dialysis for kidney failure. They're not sure what caused the heart attack but her other problems are unlikely to resolve themselves without treatment for her heart problems. She is still in the critical care unit and can only have 2 visitors at a time and they must wear masks. I hope she is able to recover enough to come home even though she may always require dialysis if her kidneys do not pick up their functioning soon. She has been a very heavy smoker and drinker, so I hope her and my uncle realize how these behaviors absolutely CANNOT continue.
This weekend is the graduate student campout for season basketball tickets but I'm not participating because I want to be able to get to the hospital immediately if necessary and also because I have a lot of lab work this week. I'm giving Monty another draft of my paper on Tuesday and I'm presenting at lab meeting on Thursday; both of these things require a lot of time this weekend that I just wouldn't have at campout. So I need to get back to work on those things shortly.
And also (at this moment) UNC is losing their football game and Duke is actually winning! I know this may not last, but it's nice for now :-)
